I had a very similar reaction to Glass Castle.
I felt like the top of my head had blown off. I can't remember the last time I reacted so violently to a book — if I ever have, that is.

I suspect that if you didn't like American Gods you won't like any of Gaiman's work,
That's a pity. I'd like to have a few living, prolific authors on my reading list whom I can trust to deliver the goods, so to say.

I notice that I'm growing increasingly impatient as I get older; I don't want to waste time on books that I don't like 100%. (One of the pains of growing older is an increasing awareness that the time at my disposal to read all the books that I want to read is limited.) I used to be a lot less critical. Ten years ago I'd have given a lot more books four or five stars: I wouldn't have had any issues with the deus ex machina devices in the fantasy books nor would I have wasted any thought on the problem of pov in The Martian. Nowadays, when I stumble across something like that, I catch myself thinking, "Menolly would never have let that pass!" :)
