A+ parenting there :) Think he has a chance at being an A+ boyfriend, too?
This is one of my favourite chapters of the whole saga. It's basically the culmination of the saga: House regaining his identity by accepting all facets of his personality and establishing a sense of self-esteem. This guy isn't asking Cuddy to save him, he's asking her to accept what he has to offer, a rounded personality who has learned to take responsibility for those around him (in his own special way).
Bits and pieces of the day at Mayfield have existed in the back of my mind ever since I returned House's identity to him in the middle of The Kelpie, but I didn't manage to turn The Kelpie round far enough to take him there.
watching Pete do fatherhood I never intended to saddle him with a kid — I seriously dislike House kid!fics, and Joel was only born out of the necessity to save Wilson's life — but once Joel was there, he was an excellent plot device for showing how House slowly develops a degree of acceptance for the tedious parts of relationships, the parts where you have to hang in for your loved ones' sakes, not for your own. Throughout canon — even during the C-arc — he was uniformly crappy at that.
the big romantic moment Still not quite happy with that — maybe my subconscious is convinced that Cuddy is meant to be with Wilson :) But if I'm not to end up writing another twenty chapters on how they rehash the past and come to terms with it, it'll have to be this 'let's pack everything into one conversation that settles everything to everyone's satisfaction' thing.
