Evangelical churches are small tight-knit communities That's so interesting. There are some similar-sized Protestants communities in Italy, and being minority they do tend to be closely knit but those I know personally (Lutherans and Waldensians) are actually much more progressive than Italian Catholicism.
I have the dubious honour of being considered batshit crazy by everyone else. I'm wondering whether you're the only person with a higher education there. At least, the mothers of my daughter's primary schoolmates (mostly working class) saw me as batshit crazy, but liked me anyway. My sons have friends who are children of scientists, and I'm not sure this is A Good Thing :).
