I think mathematics vs literature was a pretty big thing. It changed my life in a major way, and I'm surprised at how easily (and obliviously) I made that choice.
Having an accent means you're a foreigner. I'm a foreigner all the time, as I realized after ten years in the same town when people kept asking me where I was from (300km away, in the same country/language). Still, I agree it's not a big deal.
Maybe more easily understood examples would have been choosing my husband, to have kids, to have both twins, the various jobs... but I stand by the claim that my study/career was the single most important decision in my life.
Of course I never had to choose what Wilson did (most people do not), but I do see a big difference between him and Stacy. I do not think I would have taken Stacy's choice in her place, I would have let him die of need be because that's what he wanted. I would have done what Wilson did, probably with similar consequences.
