I think I upset a lot of readers with the end to this chapter That's really weird, since I found it surprising but completely believable, to the point of feeling a bit stupid that I hadn't seen it coming.
you end up paying for whatever advantages you buy yourself I don't believe that, but that might depend on interpretation. I (or my parents) bought myself the advantage of private English lessons age 10 to 15 and, well, they came with no price at all.
Unless you mean that whenever you choose something, there's something else you leave behind, which to me is kind of obvious (studying mathematics seriously => no time to study literature; learning too many foreign languages => never speak one of them without an accent) but I know a lot of people struggle with.
