It was all looking promising/possible, but.... :-(
He's just got to push the limits, doesn't he? Sad, because he has seemed to change, just the slightest, in very small but important ways. Or, not change exactly, but uncovered might be a better word. Have the heaviness of his former life and memories lifted just a bit, off of some aspects of his character that it was crushing. (Wanting to apologize or explain himself, for example.)
For instance, I could picture House maybe wanting to do those things far back in his life, but the way his father treated him, and some of his early life experiences might have worked to make those actions seem futile, so he'd ruthlessly cut them out of his life. But if he can't remember all that, some desire for that might float back up.
Actually, that's what I really like about what you did with this chapter - revealed that House doesn't really like himself that much, and that it's the cause of so many of the difficulties in his life. He admires himself (or did), in a lot of ways, but he doesn't *like* himself, and has a hard time believing that anyone else could, either.
