I am not bothered by his ways of coping ;I just found them all guilty after last week's mess. Reading your review helps and clears House's motivations. And the flatness I felt could be voluntary to reflect House's. Not happy about his probable down spiral, but still curious of how he will climb back. If TPTB lets him do that.
